Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is a scale model of the Hindu cosmos, an intricately carved sandstone monument to the god-king Suryavarman II, who believed himself to be an earthly incarnation of the god Vishnu. Bas-reliefs on the walls of Angkor Wat depict celestial dancers, who would delight and entertain the god-king throughout eternity. This magnificent temple is the symbol of the Khmer nation and its silhouette is depicted on the Cambodian national flag.

Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12th century (1112 AD). Its construction took approximately 30 years to complete. The height of Angkor Wat from the ground to the top of the central tower is greater than it might appear at 213 metres (669 feet). The most prominent architectural feature of Angkor Wat are its five stone towers.

The Angkor Wat Complex lies north of town. The town is only about 5-10 kilometers away from the famous Angkor Wat temples, regarded as one of the forgotten wonders of the world, they are Cambodia’s most famous landmark. Consisting of five separate towers it was built as a place of worship to the Hindu God Vishnu.

The town of Siem Reap is synonymous with the Angkor Wat temples and it is the stop off point for those travelling to see them.

Angkor Wat is difficult to photograph in the morning as the sun will be rising behind the temple and will blind both you and your camera!!

A temple that you must see is the "Ladies Temple" or the pink sandstone temple as they sometimes call it - It is exquisite and the remaining statues and carvings on the walls are absolutely awesome.

How many days should we spend in Siem Reap?
3 to 5 days should be sufficient to see all of the temples in the Siem Reap area. One or two are a way out of town and you need to spend a little time to get there. If you spend 5 days it will not be as rushed, remember the heat!! It my be excessive and were exhausted by midday. It (the heat) is not that bad again after 3.00pm. A really early start to each day is a good idea and you can also get some lovely pictures with very few other tourists in the areas.
